Our Story

A Company Built on Friendship and Shared Purpose

Like so many of the best things in life, Marine Zero began with a conversation sparked by a completely chance encounter.

During London International Shipping Week 2021, our founding directors Andy Hurley and Tim Munn found themselves at the same bar in a pub on London’s South Bank. They got chatting, and what started as a conversation trading career snapshots and professional connections (both had worked for decades in the maritime sector) quickly revealed something else: a shared passion for maritime decarbonisation and protecting the ocean environment.

This natural alignment of interests reflected a shared belief: that the maritime industry could – and should – do better when it comes to clean energy transition. From that first meeting in London grew a working partnership and friendship defined by trust, collaboration, and a united mission to bring real integrity and innovation to maritime clean energy.

Over the weeks and months that followed, ideas and opportunities were refined, and fellow director Dom Harris was recruited to the board. Through this process, and Marine Zero crystallised its mission – to lead the maritime sector’s transition to a sustainable, zero-emissions future with integrity and innovation at its core.

Andy Hurley

Andy Hurley was one of Marine Zero’s co-founding directors and a driving force behind everything we do. He led with warm confidence, clarity, and a commitment to doing things the right way.

Before joining Marine Zero, Andy held senior roles with the RNLI and had led several landmark maritime decarbonisation projects, including the development of the UK’s first fully electric seagoing passenger vessel. Andy also worked with the Cornwall Marine Hydrogen Centre to assist them with the development of the UK’s first hydrogen fuel cell test rig for use on small vessels, and supported the development of training best practice for hydrogen and electrical vessel operation.

Andy was a Master Mariner who loved being out on the waves – it was where he was happiest and most relaxed. Sailing wasn’t just a passion – protecting the marine environment he loved was a personal calling.

That commitment drove so many of the qualities he brought to Marine Zero: a determination to prove decarbonisation was not only possible but essential, and a firm belief that the industry had both the responsibility and capability to lead that change.

As a business partner and mentor, Andy had a rare ability to both steady and lift those around him – always generous with his time, his wisdom, and his belief in people. His skills and immense knowledge were pivotal to Marine Zero’s work on some of the UK’s most significant clean energy transition projects, including Electric Thames, Falmouth Shore Power, and the Bridge to Zero project for Tamar Crossings / Torpoint Ferry.

In July 2025, Andy passed away suddenly. His loss is deeply felt by us all.

His legacy runs through the company he helped build – from the way we lead, to the way we listen, to how seriously we take the responsibility and commitment of our work.

The values Andy lived by – integrity, collaboration, care for people and planet – remain at the heart of Marine Zero’s mission to deliver innovative solutions, practical support, and a cleaner maritime future.

We carry his vision forward, with purpose, determination, and gratitude.
